Caitryna Cormac believes she is her clan’s sole survivor after a raider attack destroys her family seat. Taken captive at age 12, she is bound as a shield maiden to Aisling, a goddess from the Otherworld, who is also taken captive by the invading Northmen. When Caitryna turns 15 she is claimed as a mate in violation of the vow that bound the goddess to the tribesmen, allowing the women to escape.
As Caitryna travels through Edealea she begins to learn what it means to be half-Fae in this world she was too young to navigate as a child. She finds support with the goddess Aisling, the new High King at Wildwood and an old childhood friend and sets out on a personal journey to reacquaint herself with the land while still seeking to preserve her autonomy as a shield maiden and warrior with the sole purpose of ridding Edealea of the Northmen.
A battle emerges between the old gods and the new faith that will set the direction of Edealea toward peace or disruption for the next century. And the fae nation, once a fair and equitable society, teeters on the brink of enacting draconian measures to bolster their numbers, making Caitryna and any child with fae blood fair game for capture. As armies of men, fae and wolves descend on Greystone Castle in a bid to retake the Riverlands, an unseen threat emerges from the Otherworld that could doom them all.
